My Turiec

My native Turiec is situated in the central and north-western part of Slovakia between the mountains Mala Fatra, Velka Fatra, Kremnicke vrchy and Ziar. Turiec valley is one of the most distinctive and high-perched valleys in Slovakia.
People talk soft and pure Slovak here and they are like their region, a little rough and proud but also beautiful and good-natured.
In Middle Ages there was one of the most important business routes leading through Turiec region. Typical craft used to be so called „olejkarstvo“ (preparation and trading with curative oils and other curative materials conneced with curative activities), and later those people became so called „safranici“ (house-to-house chapmen with various assortment of commodities). In the 19th century Turiec, mainly the town Martin, used be centre of Slovak national life. In 1863 the most important institution of Slovaks Matica slovenska came into existence in Martin. Then also two of three first Slovak secondary grammar-schools were founded in Kláštor pod Znievom and Martin.
Nowadays about 115,000 inhabitans live in Turiec region. So called Turcianska záhradka (garden) is beautiful and rich in natural beauties, cultural and historical monuments and remains, also mineral and thermal curative springs.
I heartily invite you to come !
